The Benefits of Meditation

When I first tried meditation I thought it would be a waste of my time. When we are stressed out and tired sometimes we simply don't have the desire to take a moment for ourselves, especially when meditation may seem foreign and unusual to us. However, just 5 to 15 minutes of your time per day may allow you to enjoy the wonderful benefits of meditation!

Begin by getting grounded. Meditation is highly individualized, so find your own comfort zone - whether that's sitting on the floor, chair, or couch. Even better - try to get outside. As long as it makes you feel planted, secure, and in touch with yourself, this will help renew focus, increase energy levels, and relieve stress. While crossing your legs place with your arms on your knees, close your eyes. Focus on your breathing. This is more difficult than you might think, since we all tend to drift away, thinking of the stresses of the day. Let those thoughts pass, then refocus by taking two deep breaths and begin relaxing once again. Realize that stray thoughts will occur, and you can let them flutter away like a butterfly in the wind. Keep repeating for as long as you can maintain inner silence.

After your first few meditations, you may begin to notice positive changes. First, your senses may become more heightened after practice. Your sense of smell or hearing may be enhanced. Second, you may notice the way in which you are breathing through the day.

Daily breathing practices can actually improve your stress levels drastically. Third, you will feel calm and content with who you are, where you are in life and where your journey may take you. Four, you will notice that you are less focused external stimuli such as your phone, Facebook or other meaningless worries. Fifth, your self-awareness and positive reflection of life may have a deeper, more meaningful impact each time you meditate.

Try to set aside some time in the mornings before starting the day; at lunch - after the stresses of the morning; and in the evening - to disconnect from the day's worries. No matter your schedule, you owe it to yourself to take even a minimal amount of time to decompress, and enjoy the benefits of meditation.
