An Herb Called Motherwort and its Essential Benefits

The History of Motherwort

Motherwort has a long standing history as both a medicinal herb and a cooking spice. The Latin name of Motherwort is Leourus Cardiaca and the plant is native to Europe and Asia. It grows to a height of approximately five feet and resembles a lion’s tail - a name by which the herb is also known. Its leaves resemble a lion’s ear - another nickname for this marvelous herb. Blooming in June and September, Motherwort was introduced to North America by European colonists. It is often seen growing as far north as Nova Scotia and as far south as Texas and North Carolina. Historically, the Greeks would give the herb to pregnant women anxious to give birth, thus the surname “Cardiaca,” or “heart,” since it was given as a soothing heart tonic.

Usage and Benefits of Motherwort

Often used during menopause to help with hormonal changes, pregnancy, PMS, infertility, and absence of menstrual periods, Motherwort can also assist in soothing the digestive system in cases of intestinal tract spasms. The herb is known to contain properties that help alleviate labor pains and help prevent mild forms of potential miscarriages. It is also a sedative herb that relaxes and calms the nervous system. More importantly, it is said to elevate or uplift your mood.

Motherwort is Available Locally

As mentioned above, there are many benefits to using this popular herb. Motherwort can be bought over-the-counter at your local alternative health/supplement store, so getting a bottle or two is always within reach.
