In the morning, most of us prefer a hot cup of coffee to jump start our day. However, recent studies suggest that it may be time for a change. Recent studies suggest that green tea, the world’s second most consumed beverage, is not only good for the body but also for the mind. It boosts brain power, particularly the working memory and may be a powerful aid for individuals struggling with conditions such as dementia and Alzheimer’s.
Green Tea and the Brain
Previous studies proved that polyphenols in green tea helped with brain functioning. What the studies failed to identify, though, were the special neural mechanisms that were enhanced by green tea. In 2014, a research team which included Professors Christoph Beglinger from the University Hospital of Basel and Stefan Borgwardt from the Psychiatric Universtiy Clinics successfully identified what specific functions of the brain are affected by the consumption of green tea. Because of their research, the connection between green tea and the brain are now better understood.
They tested healthy male subjects by having them drink several grams of green tea extract just before working on cognitive puzzles. Then, using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), scientists studied their brain mechanisms and discovered that green tea extract seemed to increase the communication between two major areas of their brains – the frontal cortex and the parietal. The research team concluded that green tea increases the short-term synaptic plasticity of the brain thus improving a person’s working memory.
Instant Memory Boost
Meanwhile, University of California director of sports nutrition Liz Applegate pointed out that the fact that green tea enhances cognitive activity is not “all that surprising.” She said that the biggest discovery that the 2014 research made was that it revealed green tea’s ability to enhance memory quickly.
Most studies done to observe the link between green tea consumptions and cognitive function have been long-term, observational studies. The 2014 research, according to Applegate, was more compelling as results were achieved by taking snapshots of brain activity.
The authors of the 2014 research are not clear on specifically how green tea enhances the communication between the frontal and parietal cortex. Applegate, on the other hand, thinks that this property has a lot to do with the amino acid called theanine which can only be found in green tea. In several studies, the compound has been shown to boost brain power in animals, so it is highly likely that it has the same effect on human beings. She also added that aside from theanine, green tea also contains a host of catechins (ECGC) and caffeine. Individually, these compounds have been proven to enhance brain power but when combined in green tea, they work together to be even more potent and effective.
Enjoying the Cognitive Benefits of Green Tea
To enjoy the cognitive benefits that green tea has to offer, it is recommended to brew it yourself. Applegate explained that the amount of active compounds in green tea depends on brewing time and temperature. She suggested to brew up a big pitcher and to take green tea wherever you go – at work, at school or at the gym.
