Regaining Your Energy Levels
  • Wake up. Hit snooze. Hit snooze again. And again. Finally rise upon realization of tardiness.

  • Grab a biscuit, hash browns and a large diet cola in the drive through on the way to the office.

  • Lethargically trudge through a couple of hours of work in a haze, wondering if anyone would notice if I curl up under my desk and grab a few more Zs. Occasionally do so.

  • Ahh, made it to lunch. Time to replenish my energy stores with a fat sub sandwich (whole wheat bun because it’s healthy, right?), chips, and a quart of diet cola.

  • Return to the office for a vigorous 45 minutes of actual productivity prior to the inevitable post-lunch energy nosedive.

  • Attempt to preclude said nosedive with 16 ounces of Red Bull (no high fructose corn syrup so it’s healthy, right?). Succeed in delaying the crash for 45 minutes.

  • Curl up under the desk again…

  • Finally hit my stride just in time to drive home. I feel great! Why not hit the local bar and grill with the guys and grab a burger, fries and a couple of beers!

  • Crawl into bed at 11:00. Fall asleep at midnight and wake up sporadically to urinate or for no apparent reason. Mumble to self, “I’m only 35, why am I waking up so much? Oh well, guess I’m just gettin’ old…)

  • Wash, rinse, repeat, 5 days a week.

That was me, quite literally, many years ago and for an extended amount of time. Sound familiar to you? If so, you could be in trouble, much as I was. I had chronic health issues such as unexplainable inflammation (please don’t ask), elevated cholesterol and triglycerides, autoimmune conditions (arthritis), and frequent bad heartburn. My doctors told me I should just accept this as a part of “just getting old.” I did not. However, despite my best efforts at the time (working out more frequently, popping a statin daily, etc.) my issues persisted, so I found myself resigned to growing old faster than I thought I should.

Then, for reasons that I’ll detail in a later post, I found the Paleo Diet. Or, more accurately, the diet found me. Since then, my energy levels no longer fluctuate – I have consistently high energy throughout the day and into the evening. No more mid-morning or post-lunch nosedives, no more energy drinks. I can even skip meals here and there and not notice the difference, energy-wise.

Less than a year later, upon returning to the doctor for my annual physical (this time, having requested a more detailed and relevant lipid panel), he said, and I quote, “You have the blood of an 18 year old.” Given the fact that both of my parents died young due to cardiovascular problems, this news was quite welcome. I only wish that I could have recorded his statement. I also wish that I could’ve imparted my new-found (at the time) wisdom to my parents, who would likely still be alive today as a result.

I’m writing this article for those of you who may still experience these energy dives. Do not accept them as part of your standard day, or as part of growing old. However, DO accept them as part of a larger, holistic problem – one that CAN and SHOULD be solved naturally, by implementing the Paleo/Primal lifestyle. The repercussions of NOT resolving these issues could be immense, so do not take your symptoms lightly.
