Can Turmeric Effectively Balance Your Thyroid Levels?

As health professionals we get asked that question frequently, so let’s dig into it. Turmeric is derived from from underground stems (rhizomes) of the plant Curcuma longa, which is a member of the ginger family. Curcumin (also known as curcumoids or phenolic compounds) is an active constituent in turmeric, but both names are used interchangeably in herbal medicine. It is used as a medicine in many South Asian cultures. In Ayurveda this ‘golden herb’ contains anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial and antioxidant pharmacological properties.
Turmeric Contains Anti-inflammatory Ingredients
This remarkable spice is recommended for alleviating inflammatory conditions such as arthritis and autoimmune conditions. It is especially well known to balance the thyroid hormone quickly and effectively. Some of the common causes of thyroid issues:
Iodine and selenium deficiencies
An overload of toxicity due to environmental causes
Increase in stress (elevated cortisol levels)
High dietary consumption of gluten
Eventually the thyroid can get overloaded with years of exposure to toxins and stress, such that it eventually becomes out of balance.
