The Problem with Herbicides

Most herbicides are marketed to us as "safe," but how safe are they, really? Let's think about it logically: The majority of herbicides are intentionally designed by chemical engineers to be toxic to specific life forms. Given the choice, would you honestly want to consume (by ingestion or topically) an engineered toxin?

Let's look at glyphosate, which is the main ingredient in most herbicides. Glyphosate works by inhibiting essential nutrient uptake in plants - preventing certain metabolic pathways necessary for life from functioning properly. While there is not much good science demonstrating that similar effects are evident in humans exposed to glyphosate, the question becomes more of an exercise in risk management. In other words, we don't fully understand the risks associated with glyphosate exposure, so do you really want to take someone else's word that it's totally safe for you and your family?
Check out the following links to help you make your decision:
This paper establishes a link between glyphosate (the active ingredient in herbicides like Roundup) and changes in the gut microbiome that contribute to numerous modern diseases including autism, IBD, depression, cancer and more. (Courtesy: ChrisKresser.com)
Here is an excellent article by Dave Asprey at Bulletproof.com containing a lot of relevant information on glyphosate, with extensive references for your surfing pleasure.
Glyphosate acts as a chelator of calcium, magnesium, manganese, copper and zinc, basically preventing their uptake and use in metabolic pathways. So if you're eating foods contaminated with glyphosate, your body is likely not adequately absorbing these essential minerals.
As usual, Dr. Mercola provides his fantastic input on glyphosate here.
Again, there is a lot of conflicting information out there regarding glyphosate. So the question becomes: How comfortable are you with exposing yourself and others to a known toxin? Personally, I have a very low risk tolerance, and therefore will err on the side of caution by choosing organic foods. I'll also elect not to spray glyphosate in my yard for risk of skin exposure. I recommend you do the same, for optimal health!
